The COP28 recently concluded in Dubai, spanning over 13 days, during which representatives of more than 195 nations and international engaged in crucial climate negotiations. Climate change manifests itself primarily through water, and different companies and associations played their part in placing water as the element to tackle the climate crisis. Through a series of dedicated activities at the Water for Climate Pavilion, and other pavilions, Water Europe, for example, organized and participated in 10 sessions positioning water at the heart of the discussions.

Notably, the WE Roundtable on Industry & Water Efficiency brought together global industrial representatives to delve into water efficiency for industrial activities, underlining challenges, opportunities, and synergies with utilities. Key themes included the importance of skills, financial tools, and resource recovery for implementing a Water-Smart Strategy.

During the Water Day at COP28, Water Europe featured prominently in four sessions, shedding light on the significance of Water-Oriented Living Labs in developing sustainable water solutions and highlighting the critical role of the water-energy nexus. Circular processes for wastewater treatment took precedence, emphasizing the need for the right legislative drivers and a strategic approach.

What is key to remember from COP28?

  • The climate crisis is primarily a water crisis.
  • Water is at the core of adaptation but also key for mitigation. The water sector is responsible for 2% of the global carbon emissions, similar to the shipping industry.
  • Water is a key enabler for circular economy.
  • A secure, sustainable and resilient water system is not just an option. It’s the only way forward. We should now progress towards a Water-Smart Society building on the EESC Call for a Blue Deal and the Water Resilience Initiative of the European Commission for moving towards an EU water strategy.
